Christmas and New Year holidays are now behind us, a busy period that takes away many of our physical and mental energies. January arrives and we try to realign the body and the spirit, we recharge ourselves and making new year’s resolutions. One of the best ways to achieve this inner peace is to spend some time on ourselves, carried away by the magic of some great hot springs.
In this article we will discover some thermal excellences of Tuscany and Lazio, hoping to stimulate your imagination for an experience of wellness and relaxation. We will talk about free thermal baths and spas, wellness oasis where you can make sensory trails, saunas and massages, surrounded by the beauty of nature.
Let’s start from the north of Tuscany, with a historical place like Montecatini Terme. This town is located a short distance from Florence, its spas are an excellence in terms of hydropinic cures. Descending along the Tyrrhenian coast we find the enchanting village of Sassetta, in the Livornese hinterland. Here you can enjoy the thermal waters immersed in the wild nature of the Etruscan Coast. Here then are the spas of the wonderful Elba Island, in the heart of the Tuscan archipelago: these hot springs have only recently developed, but are already famous for marine mud-based treatments. We move into the heart of Maremma to appreciate some of the most beautiful and famous free spa in Italy, the thermal baths of Saturnia. They are ancient sulphureous springs, already known to Etruscans and Romans, the most well-known free baths are the Cascate del Mulino, but the area is also rich in spas and pools. We move towards the heart of Tuscany, in the province of Siena: here you find spas of the highest level, within medieval villages and wild woods, where emotional well-being equals the physical one. We mention the Terme di Petriolo in the west, Rapolano Terme in the east, Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo in the south, in the extraordinary Val d’Orcia, UNESCO World Heritage site. Two other places suitable for a wellness holiday are Chianciano Terme and San Casciano Bagni, located on the border between Tuscany and Umbria: places full of tradition, specialized also for real medical treatments.
Going down the Italian boot we arrive in Lazio, another region that offers many alternatives for spa tourism. The spas of Lazio are distinguished by beauty, history, refinement and for the great variety, considering that nearly every municipality has something interesting to offer. Viterbo is famous for the fabulous thermal spring of Bullicame, which powers the majestic thermal pool of the Terme dei Papi and the ancient baths of Orte. Also the province of Frosinone shows its high-profile spas such as Fiuggi (place of international relevance for thermal treatments), Terme Varroniane and Terme di Pompeo, real oasis of well-being wellness oasis of sensory treatments. Rieti is famous for the picturesque spas of Cotilia and Cottorella, places of charm known since the Roman era, where it is still possible to come into deep contact with nature. In Latina there are the Terme di Suio and the thermal park of Sant’Egidio, for mud and wellness treatments. Finally Rome, which beyond its historical and artistic magnificence is also famous for the great value of its baths. In the surroundings of the capital there are 4 unmissable spa areas: the impetuous source of the Acque Albule, the Terme di Stigliano, the Terme di Ficonella and the Terme di Cretone.
