That time when travel meant adventure and the car a good for the few, revered by those who had the fortune to possess it and envied by those who could not afford. The sound of the horn, the roar of the engine, the dirt and much less busy roads are memories of a world that we can see today only in black and white pictures.

In Italy, however, there is a weekend in which every year, magically, we try to revive that atmosphere: the 1000 Miglia.

A race that has seen all the biggest names in motor racing starting from the first editions. Unique in its kind: a speed race over distance, on roads open to traffic, along a 1000-miles, about 1,600 kilometers. The historical competition was held from 1927 to 1957. Then it was interrupted by dramatic accidents to be restored in 1977, from when it relived as a regularity race for vintage cars.

Now in its 37th edition, it will leave Brescia on Wednesday 15th May, crossing the heart of Bel Paese towards Rome, then returning to Brescia on Saturday 18th May, after having stopped in Cervia – Milano Marittima, Rome and Bologna. The 1000 Miglia 2019 will feature 430 exceptional cars, evidence of history of design and car industry. It is also thanks to this exciting race that over time, great Italian brands have become known all over the world: think of the Gran Turismo by Alfa Romeo, Lancia and of course, Ferrari.

On the first day, the timeless vintage cars will flash on the wonderful Italian roads, crossing exceptional locations such as Lake Garda in Desenzano and Sirmione, then Valeggio sul Mincio (passing by the wonderful Parco Giardino Sigurtà), Mantova, Ferrara, Comacchio and Ravenna, to arrive in Cervia and Milano Marittima in the evening

Thursday 16th May, the caravan will reach Cesenatico and will continue to Senigallia, Fabriano, Assisi, Perugia, Terni and Rieti until reaching Rome at sunset time: an unforgettable scenario of great emotional impact.

On Friday 17th May the return to the north will begin. In the background, the breathtaking landscapes of Lake Vico and Viterbo. Entering Tuscany, the drive through Val d’Orcia is certainly one of the most loved by the race enthousiasts, with unique villages such as Radicofani and Castiglione d’Orcia, then the marvelous Siena, where this year a lunch break will be organized in Piazza del Campo. Vinci, Montecatini, Pistoia, crossing the historic Passo della Futa and Passo della Raticosa, to arrive in Bologna, in Emilia, a land that has always been devoted to engines. On the final day, Saturday 18th May, they will pass through Modena, Reggio Emilia, Langhirano, Parma, Busseto, Montichiari and Travagliato, to end with a triumphal entry into Brescia, for the traditional parade in Viale Venezia.

The 1000 Miglia has a unique charm in the world, perhaps it is really the most beautiful race, as defined by the great Enzo Ferrari, not just as exaltation of the race itself, but for the countless facets of beauty that it can offer: cars, historical cities, nature and why not, food and wine.
